The Secret Place

Psalm 91:1  "He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High
shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty."
We all want to abide under the shadow of the Almighty. What a comforting thought to know that we are sheltered under His wings. This chapter goes on to say that God will deliver us from the snare of the fowler and that He is our refuge. We do not need to fear, for though a thousand shall fall at our side, and ten thousand at our right hand, it will not come nigh to us.
Psalm 91 is one of my favorite chapters in the Bible. Many times I have found comfort and strength in these words. I have heard many people quote these verses, but how many of us skip over the first verse? He that dwelleth in the secret place.  We have to have that secret place where we can have that personal connection and communication with the Almighty.
For many years I would have a great devotional time every morning during my summer vacation…but as soon as I started back to work, that would change.  I still prayed every day and read my Bible --- occasionally.  I purchased many little devotional books that gave me a 5-minute fix, and fit into my busy life, and I felt that was enough.  I’m not against devotional books- I still enjoy them, but they do not need to replace Bible reading.  A few years ago, I was going in the same pattern in the fall.  About the third week of school, I started waking up at 4:00 am on the dot.  I would lay there and not be able to go back to sleep.  I would pray for my children and my family, and worry that something was wrong…but I could not go back to sleep.  After the third morning (it didn’t take me long to get the message!), I told my husband about it and he said that maybe God was trying to tell me something- and I knew what it was- my secret place…my devotional time…I knew that I had to start setting the clock to rise early enough to have my prayer time. So I now set my clock 45 minutes earlier so I can have my devotional time.  I want to dwell in the secret place- I want to have that special time with God every day.
Do you have a secret place?  If not, then carve out a time for God each day.
